Club Scene

Gonna make this one short and sweet cause I am doped to the limit on Nyquil and Tylenol Sinus ... friggin' strep has been replaced with the sinus infection from hades! Looks like my immune system has finally decided to revolt against the public school system!

Anyways ... oldies but goodies! These never came all together, but instead as two separate sets ... Retro Lounge Eye and Soho Lounge Eye kits. Still, in my brain they have kinda belonged together ... so I hope everyone gets what I was going for. Hot Spot takes on such awesome qualities ... in the pictures it is so neutral, but in some lighting today this look seemed downright pink and purple!

Enjoy!

CARGO Tahiti Quad

OMG OMG OMG! I friggin' love this quad! The colours blend amazingly together, and it was just so much fun to put on a wear. I am still astounded at how much I love it ... and was really thinking I would end up returning it since it was an impulse purchase .... but I am keeping it! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

I also broke out my never-used sample of Tulip blush (since someone had mentioned it on MM and I was intrigued) and it is awesome too ... though I have to say that on me it looks just like a slightly more pigmented Frisky blush. Oh well ... still fun ... and gotta love the new MAC Cremesheen lipsticks! Woot! Good makeup day!

Eyeshadow bases ... the method to the madness

Hi all! I just wanted to do a quick post because I have gotten several questions lately through PM, comment and email regarding what bases I use for my eyeshadows and why I use which one. So here goes!

First of all ... if you aren't using some kind of base (I don't mean an eye primer ... I mean an eye base) then I highly recommend it. I didn't start using them until just a few months ago and now I find that I am not spending time liquifying colours to get them to show up ... and then more time blending the wet colours ... then even more time washing the brushes that had the wet colours on them, etc etc etc.

Here is my personal opinion of the difference between the eye primer (like BE Prime Time for Eyes, UDPP, Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance, etc.) and a base (MAC shadesticks, metal-x, paintpots, etc). A primer just holds the colours to the skin and makes it go on smoother and last longer, but it dries to a smooth finish so there is nothing to enhance the colours. A base dries to a semi-tacky finish, so it grabs the colours which absorb that extra tackiness and brighten up. Make sense?

So basically ... if you want your shadows to last a while but look like they would if you just swatched them dry on the back of your hand with a brush, use a primer only and skip the bases I am going to talk about. If you want your colours to look the way they look foiled or in the jar, use a base. I use both, but mainly because I use the primer on my entire eye socket, so it not only holds my colours but also holds my concealer for the entire day around my eye.

Here are some bases that I think are all great options ...

1) MAC Shadestick in Beige-ing - this is a pale cream colour crayon that creates a great foiled effect and stays on for hours. I draw mine on with the crayon then blend them with my fingers. These are my favorites ... but beware that once you get it on and the colour over it, there is no way to tone that colour down. There are alternative crayons from Maybelline, CoverGirl etc. (and I am sure others) but they don't have the staying power or the vibrancy of the MAC ones in my experience. If you want to use a dark base to really bring out darker colours, you can use Sharkskin instead of Beige-ing ... Sharkskin is currently sold at Nordie's as part of the Gold Fever collection, and once it is gone it is gone.

2) MAC Paintpots - The colour I use the most in the paintpots is Bare Study, but I do have some of the more colourful ones from the Alexander McQueen collection. These are not nearly as easy to blend over powder makeup (like BE) as the shadesticks are and don't have the wet shadow effect, but they have some staying power that would get your eyeshadows through a nuclear holocaust. I have just recently discovered brushes that make these usuable for me, but they are not my favorites. Some people however, like people with oily lids, swear by them.

3) MAC Metal-X Cream Shadow - This has the foiled effect of the shadesticks ... and adds some sparkle factor ... but doesn't have anywhere near the staying power as the previous two items I have listed. You will see me use it alot because for me it is the fastest one to put on, and in the mornings before school with two toddlers I am almost always in a hurry. The bad thing about these is that I got it at a CCO because it is an old LE item, and now they don't have it anymore. So, when I run out that is just it ... no more. Good option for being fast and adding sparkle, but wouldn't work well for someone that has issues with shadows creasing on them.

4) NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils - These are very comparable to the shadesticks, but really really creamy and more blendable. They also add to that foiled effect, but again because of their creaminess don't have the staying power of the shadesticks. The colour selection though is great, and they are cheap! I like to use them when I want to have a gradual fade towards my brow because I can put it on up to the crease then gradually blend it upwards.

OK ... so I hope that helps explain some things! Thanks so much for reading through this novel ... and if you have any other questions please comment here about it! Thanks Ladies!

Bare Ruby

Yet another new kit ... it is getting hard to keep them straight since so many are coming out all at once, but I am pleasantly surprised by this one. The colours are pretty, and for being a full coverage buxom Ruby is alot more sheer than it's counterparts. Overall ... a good kit ... and the clutch that comes with it is to die for!

I completely stole my dear sisboo's idea of lining with the Luminous Lashes mascara ... which was an awesome idea considering that those things never show up on me. It was a little stiff feeling, but not to the point that I even noticed it after a few minutes. I also used my latest UD 24/7 purchase ... Honey ... which is described as 24K Gold ... and they mean that description. Love it!

Enjoy!

Face:

Wild Ruby dry in crease, lining outer two thirds of lower lashline and on outer third of lid; used double ended Shaping Eye brush and Wet/Dry brush
Vintage Ruby dry on middle third of lid; used Wet/Dry brush
Golden Ruby dry on inner third of lid, wrapped around inner corner and along inner third of lower lashline, and swept up into crease and onto browbone; used Wet/Dry brush

Updated Lip Charts!

I have updated my MAC lipstick charts and BE Buxom lip charts to reflect the recent purchases. Enjoy!

Today's Retail Therapy Session!

OK ... so having strep throat sucks royally ... but the good thing is that it makes the man feel sorry for me and therefore willing to take me shopping with little to no whining (still my money being spent ... but I was in no mood to drive).

So here is the haul ... first we stopped at Nordie's where I picked up six of the new MAC Cremesheen lipsticks (love love love). The finish of these (for those of you familiar with the different MAC finishes ... if you are not you are missing out on a great variety!) has the shine of the lustres with the colour payoff of the satins ... way awesome! Here are some swatches of what I got:

Then I went to Sephora ... and didn't get anything because the SA's in that Sephora are always really rude to me when I have my kids with me ... like the fact that I have two toddlers means that I am not going to spend anything and I am just wasting their time. Grrrr!

But after that (and lunch) I went to the Sephora in JCPenney's ... where the SAs are MUCH nicer ... and got the new Cargo Tahiti quad that I have been drooling over. The texture is gonna take some getting used to since I usually use loose shadows, but the colours and the compact itself are soooooo pretty. Have a look:

And then to make myself feel better and less like a slug I went and got my eyebrows waxed. I had tried threading the last time ... and the shape was all wrong for my face (too round, not enough arch) ... not to mention that it hurt like holy hades and I had to start plucking them within a week. But I went to my local ULTA where they have a new aesthetician and she was AWESOME! First time I have ever had anyone actually measure my face to determine the shape of my brows ... and I really love how they turned out. You will see the fabulous results in upcoming looks.

So there was my day ... hope you enjoyed the swatches and had a great Saturday!

How To Steal A Million

This look was done as a request from our dear lovely Paige at MM. The best things I can say about her just don't do her personality justice, but I can honestly say that you Paige are a bright, generous and extremely positive person to have around ... and I greatly appreciate people like you in the world.

Paige asked for me to recreate Audrey Hepburn's look in the old film "How to Steal a Million" ... and I have tried my best to do so. It still isn't quite a match because no matter how hard I try with technique and shaping I will never even be able to fake having Audrey Hepburns eyes or wide smile, but the look in and of itself is pretty cool. Not only that, but it was alot of fun to attempt.

The bottom photo is what Paige kindly linked me to for inspiration, and it helped a great deal (how we lucked into having a photo with her eyes closed is beyond good fortune) ... and of course, here is the IMDB link to the movie.

Enjoy!

Extreme Glimmers

Hi all! Ok ... so honest opinion about these ... they are pretty .... but SOOOOOO much of a pain to work with! It isn't that they are hard to work with ... just time consuming to get the way I want them to look. Add to that the fallout factor (hello GLITTER) and they are almost too much of a pain to bother with. Oh ... and the brush that comes with them is completely useless IMHO!

Still I pretty look ... and I finally got my UD 24/7 pencil in Deviant ... LOVE LOVE LOVE!

And isn't the necklace STUNNING! It was made by my dear friend Susie, and I think it is just gorgeous. She is the beading master, and I admire her skills a great deal. Thanks so much for the amazing ornamentation Susie! Love ya'!

Hope everyone enjoys this one ... don't think I will be recreating it anytime soon!

Mario Badescu ... first impressions

I finally got my order this morning ... I should have gotten it Thursday but my UPS man is a moron ... but I digress. I will go about this product by product, so that there is some sort of organization to my rambling.

Oh yeah ... and I got a GREAT unexpected surprise of a batch of samples from them too! Not only that ... but apparently the samples were coordinated around what I ordered because they were all in a kit for my skintype (combo-oily, acne prone). I got little bottles of a Cucumber cleanser, Cucumber toner, and small jars of a Cucumber mask, Oil-free moisturizer and hyaloronic acid eye cream (OMG ... LOVE this!) The sample pack was a GREAT surprise ... and says alot for their business practices!

Glycolic Foaming Cleanser - I was impressed that this is such a large bottle (six ounces) and that it takes so little to get the job done. I probably used about the size of a quarter in my palm to wash my whole face ... and of course I used my Clarisonic as well. Since it is a cleanser it is to soon for me to really notice any results, but it was nice in that my face felt really clean and it got everything off just fine. No burning or drying out my skin either ... and the smell is rather pleasant!

Special C Cleansing Lotion - Don't let the name fool you .... this is a toner ... and it is YELLOW! My first reaction when I put some on the cotton pad was "um ... is this going to turn my skin yellow?" because it is that yellow. But it didn't .... and this was NICE because it had an immediate mattifying effect on my skin that is still there. I used it about four hours ago and my face still is not oily in the least. I really like this stuff ... the smell is kinda interesting ... and combo of skincare smell and cucumbers, but not overpowering and not unpleasant ... just interesting.

Buffering Lotion - Again, this is a liquid ... not really a lotion. That alone makes it really interesting to apply because it comes in a dropper type bottle and I don't want to waste it on a cotton pad. Basically I just put some on my finger and rubbed it on each blemish. It dried completely smooth and while I haven't noticed any results yet, the reviews of this one are good enough for me to be excited. Only precaution is that this one reeks of rubbing alcohol ... I know that lots of people say that is a no no for your face, but I have never had issues with products with alcohol in them ... and like rubbing alcohol the smell disappears quickly. Oh yeah ... you got shake this one alot!

Drying Lotion - This stuff is really interesting ... again not a lotion. It is a powder suspended in a liquid, and the bottle says NOT to shake it up so that they stay separated. The instructions are to use it at night (so I haven't tried it yet) and to dip a q-tip into the pink sediment, apply it to breakouts and let dry. I will try this tonight ... but I wanted to give my first opinions on it. Again, I have heard nothing but great reviews on this one so I am excited to try it. It really reminds me of calamine lotion though ... the way it looks and smells ... which tempts me to use it on all my infernal mosquito bites!

Drying Cream - This is really similar to the Proactiv mask that comes in all the kits ... except you can rub it in and don't have to wash it off. Sulphur is obviously the active ingredient, but it isn't nearly as strong smelling as the BE Blemish Therapy. It also has zinc oxide in it, so it kinda works as a pre-concealer because the whiteness defracts the light. I put it on under my makeup, and though it stayed kinda tacky it didn't mess with my makeup application at all. Again ... really a good mattifying effect.

And now for the hard part ... here are some pics of me WITHOUT makeup so that we all know what I am trying to treat. I did cover up my birthmark (in the middle of my forehead) ... but otherwise I am completely bare faced. The close up is of the type of cystic clusters that I have been dealing with constantly for the last six months. If this stuff works for those I am completely sold on it forever!

Needless to say ... I am extremely jittery about posting no-makeup pics ... so please be gentle!

Up from the Ashes

If you are one of the few that had heard my opinion of the new BE Cares colour when I received it and swatched it on my hand yesterday, you will understand the title of this look. For those of you that don't ... I will explain!

When I saw it in the jar I was like "ugh ... what an awful colour!" ... so then I swatched it on my hands ... and to me it seriously looked like cigarette ashes with green glitter. Not pretty! So needless to say my original impression of this colour was not good.

But I decided to use it today anyway ... and it has redeemed itself to a point. The colour is no longer ashy like it was on my hand (thank god!), and it is certainly unique. I like it for the uniqueness ... but otherwise it just isn't all that grande to me. And then for some reason I paired it with Organza (a gorgeous but also weird colour) and that didn't really help.

The undertones of Santuary kinda remind me of the same undertones as Pure Spice ... which is a much unloved BE colour. But anyway ... I will let the masses decide (Lisa and sisboo ... that means you!)

Enjoy!
